The Peckham Power Post, Issue 3, March 2010
Upcoming Diary Dates
- 17th April 2010 Peckham Power and Energy Saving Trust team up for an Energy Saving showcase event. The event will be held in Area10 which is in the Eagle Wharf building in Peckham Square just behind Peckham Library. This will be a practical, hands-on event with demonstrations on loft insulation, sustainable energy workshops and driving simulators. More details on this soon but please put the date in your diary.
- We are planning an informal conversation with three local people who already have experience of solar thermal panels for hot water on Wednesday 12 May at 6.30pm (venue to be confirmed).
Report from March Members Event
The 13th March 2010 Peckham Power Spring Members Event was a great success. It was attended by around 30 people and featured a fascinating talk from green designer and engineer Ross Atkin. Members made useful comments on the PP constitution, which we will now submit to the Charity Commission as part of our application to register as a charitable association. We made connections with new organisations and some valuable helping hands.
Policy Studies Institute
We were delighted to be asked by Kate McGeevor, senior researcher at the Policy Studies Institute, and Ross Atkin, a green engineer and designer, to be their partner community group in a research funding application which would help us develop our power meter project further. We should know the funding decision in June 2010.
Power meter project update
We have created a mock-up animation of the power meter display we're designing and we have asked St John’s and St Clement’s primary school if some of their pupils would be able to give us feedback; the pupils’ school council are considering this issue.
Equipment installation at local renewable electricity sites: we need a renewables’ qualified and registered electrician to help with this – if you know of one, please contact us.
Household monitors guinea pigs – we need some volunteer households to trial our smart meters please – get in touch if you’re interested. This would involve having an "AlertMe" smart meter installed in your house and you'd be able to see your personal consumption on an online graph (Google Power Meter).
Funding Update – Success!
We are delighted to announce that Peckham Power has received Peckham Council’s Cleaner Greener Safer funding to extend the Power Meter Project and to create a dolls house illustrating various renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Well done to the team members that worked hard to win this money!
Look out for some website changes
- We’ve added a “Vote for Power” page so you can show your support for community-owned local renewable power.
- We are also working on an online map to show the location of local renewables and energy efficiency installations. We plan to work on the map in April and May; more in our next newsletter. The map will probably be based on the free, popular "Open Street Map" which allows anyone to edit it (in much the same way as WikiPedia). Please contact jack [at] peckhampower [dot] org if you are interested in getting involved in the mapping project.
